Karsiyaka
The first mention of the village Karsiyaka was found in the Ottoman archives, dating from 1248. According to the records, Karsiyaka was one of the 44 regions of Cyprus. Karsiyaka, also known under the old name of Vasili is located to the west of Kyrenia, twenty kilometers from the tourist center. Over the centuries, the most important source of income for the village were lemon groves and carob trees. Karsiyaka benefits from incredible scenery: green mountains, olive groves and citrus trees, blue waters of the Mediterranean. Most of Karsiyaka’s coast is rocky, although there are a few bays and sandy beaches which can be enjoyed. Sea turtles chose one of these beaches, Guzelyali, as a place for laying eggs.
The Monastery of Sinai can be seen high above Karşıyaka village in the Kyrenia mountain range, sitting well above the last of the modern villas. The monastery itself is in complete ruins and very little information is available on its history. Coupled with the faded Byzantine engravings and trees growing out of the masonry, there is a concrete irrigation system which was apparently installed in 1953. This follows the tradition of most things in Cyprus being a culmination of multiple influences, cultures and random seemingly renovation. The area surrounding the monastery is thankfully untouched and is filled with ancient twisted olive trees framing great views over the coastline of Kyrenia. The dirt tracks surrounding the monastery are used by the local shepherds to guide their goats to grazing areas and also double up as good walking paths. The ‘official’ paths are always marked by green and white dots, the red and white dots indicate the track is better suited to mountain bikes.
